So, you need some asphalt work done on your property, maybe a new driveway, a repair, or a parking lot. It's a big investment, and you want to make sure you're hiring the right folks for the job. I've been in this business a long time, seen a lot of good work and, frankly, a lot of bad work. Here's what I tell my neighbors when they ask me how to find a solid contractor.

What to Ask Before They Even Quote

You're not just buying asphalt; you're buying expertise and reliability. Don't be shy about asking questions. A good contractor will welcome them.

  • How long have you been in business, specifically doing asphalt work? This isn't just about general contracting experience. Asphalt is a specialty. You want someone who knows the ins and outs of paving.
  • Can you provide references from recent, local jobs? And I mean recent. If they're giving you references from five years ago, that's a red flag. Call those references. Ask about the quality of the work, if they stuck to the timeline, and if they were easy to communicate with.
  • Are you licensed and insured? This is non-negotiable. They need general liability insurance, and worker's comp if they have employees. Ask for proof. If they hesitate, walk away. You don't want to be liable if someone gets hurt on your property or if something goes wrong.
  • What's your warranty on the work? A reputable company will stand behind their work. Get it in writing. A year is usually standard for new installations, but ask what's covered.
  • Who will be doing the actual work? Your crew or subcontractors? Some companies sub out everything. That's not always bad, but you need to know who's ultimately responsible and who you'll be dealing with day-to-day.

Decoding the Quote: What to Look For

You'll get a few quotes, I'm sure. Don't just compare the bottom line. The details matter, especially with something like asphalt that needs to stand up to our hot Bryan summers and heavy rains.

  • Detailed Scope of Work: Does it clearly outline every step? Things like excavation, base preparation (this is huge, especially with our clay soils around here in Bryan), asphalt thickness, compaction, and drainage. If it just says
